I creat my earthenware work from soft slabs and coils of clay, often adding texture with stamps and forming shapes on molds made of fired clay. The surfaces are finished with terra sigillata, a finely textured clay slip, and bisque fired. I then finish the bisque-fired surfaces with a black copper oxide wash to accentuate the surface txtures and then apply a borax wash before the final glaze firing.
I make my pieces with textured slabs of clay, utilizing paper patterns, bisque molds and stamps, and a few simple tools. I am inspired by the rustic and the primitive architecture and art of early native America, pre-westernized Asia, and medieval Europe. Making hand-built pottery is an outgrowth of my long experience making architectural models and drawing as an Architect. I finish the eroded surfaces of my pieces with colored terra sigillita, oxides, borax and lithium washes, or fire my work in a gas kiln with soda that corrodes the surfaces of my pieces
